BiographyGerard Thomas was born in Antwerp and was
apprenticed while still young to Godfried Maes in
1680. He was elected a member of the Guild of St.
Luke in 1688 where he was to continue in the tradition
of David Rijckaert III, painting genre scenes in
interior settings. He also studied as an alchemist and
this interest inspired him to execute some remarkable
works relating to the subject. Painters and sculptors
in their studios were also a common theme in his production
and these are painted with careful attention
to detail and with a great number of classical and contemporary
sculptures and paintings, which he had
presumably seen in collections around Antwerp.
Thomas had many pupils, among them Balthasar van
den Bossche. Stylistically Thomas belongs to the 18th
century. His works are often mistaken for those of
Baltahsar van den Bossche and Hendrik Govaerts.
