BiographyPortelli had been a student of Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio. He participated in the decorations for the 1539 wedding of Cosimo de´ Medici and Eleonora da Toledo by finishing a painting left incomplete by Salviati. According to Vasari Portelli painted numerous crucifixes, including two that were begun by Salviati. He also participated in the wedding festivities in 1565 for the marriage of Francesco I to Johanna of Austria. Portelli´s altarpieces can be found in Florence: the Immaculate Conception (1551) and the Martyrdom of St. Romuald (S.Maria Maddalena de´Pazzi). His style shows a strong influence of Salviati and Vasari, although after the 1560s the fantastic and dark style of Giovanni Stradano characterizes his paintings. [P.
