BiographyPietro Antonio De Pietri was born in the village
of Cadarese in the north of Italy. At a young age
he was sent to relatives in Rome, before starting
his apprenticeship with the artists Giuseppe
Ghezzi and Angelo Massarotti. Around 1683,
Carlo Maratta took De Pietri into his workshop,
where he was appreciated for his ability to make
copies. In 1703 he became a member of the Accademia
dei Virtuosi del Pantheon and a few years
later of the Accademia di San Luca. De Pietri
was a prolific artist, and among his public works
are the ceiling decoration of the chapel in the
Palazzo Del Bufalo (today Ferraioli), commissioned
by Cardinal Imperiali, and the altarpieces
of the Crucifixion in the church of Santi Vincenzo
e Anastasio, Rome, and the Madonna and Child
with Saints Lawrence and Anthony in the church
of Santa Maria in Via Lata, Rome. De Pietri was
also a skilled draughtsman and engraver. Largely
forgotten in the 1800s, De Pietri’s oeuvre was
rediscovered in the 20th century through the
studies of, among others, Anthony M. Clark,
Joachim Harold and Suzanne Folds
