BiographyJan van Dalen was often confused with Jan van
Dalem.1 He was a painter of religious subjects and
portraits. In 1632–1633 he was a pupil of David de
Middelaer in Antwerp. In 1640–1641 he became master
in the city’s Guild of St. Luke. In his portraits Jan
van Dalen was influenced by Anthony van Dyck.
