Biography[2002-01-15]
Arkitekt, stadsarkitekt i Stockholm från 1803. Gjörwell var från 1788 elev till Louis Jean Desprez och dennes medarbetare och efterföljare vid Haga och Karlberg. Med studier i Rom kompletterade han sin klassiska skolning och utförde från 1790-talets slut flera betydande byggnader. I Åbo Akademi 1800 utnyttjades nyantikens elementära grepp för ett omfattande institutionskomplex med storslagna interiörer. Herrgårdstypen varierades ur olika förutsättningar bland annat i Sävstaholm 1804 och Taxinge Näsby 1807, båda i Södermanland, och även i Drottningens paviljong på Haga (nu Haga slott) 1802. Garnisonssjukhuset i Stockholm (nu Landstingshuset), 1816-34, visar i formernas tyngd och proportioner G:s konservativa klassicism med en enkelt uttrycksfull korrespondens mellan rumsdisposition och volym.
