Dumée, Guillaume
(b ?Fontainebleau, 1570; d Paris, 1646).
French painter. He was primarily a decorative painter, employed on schemes commissioned by Henry IV at the royal palaces of the Louvre, the Tuileries, Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Fontainebleau. None of these works survives, however, and they are known only through the writings of André Félibien and Henri Sauval and from a handful of drawings that have been associated with the work. At Saint-Germain Dumée worked under Toussaint Dubreuil on the decoration of a gallery with scenes from Pierre de Ronsard’s La Franciade. It is possible that he was in charge of the work after Dubreuil’s death. Two drawings associated with the scheme have been attributed to him: Hyanthus and Clymenus Sacrificing to Venus (Paris, Louvre) and the Companions of Hyanthus (Besançon, Mus. B.-A. & Archéol.). At the Louvre he worked on the Cabinet de la Reine, which he decorated with scenes from Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata c. 1610–14, collaborating with Jacob Bunel, Ambroise Dubois and Gabriel Honnet. Dumée was responsible for three scenes known from drawings: Olindo and Sofronia at the Stake (Rouen, Bib. Mun.), Clorinda Interceding with the Sultan on Behalf of Olindo and Sofronia and Olindo and Sofronia Freed from the Stake (both Paris, Ecole N. Sup. B.-A.)
Dumée was also active as a portrait painter, delivering in 1612 a group portrait of the Magistrates and Aldermen of Paris (untraced) intended for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. In 1605 he had been appointed Garde des Peintures at Saint-Germain, a title he gave up in 1626 in favour of his son Toussaint Dumée (1601–after 1656), in order to devote himself to the post of Peintre des Tapisseries, to which he had been appointed in 1610.
