Panini principally painted various landscapes – often capricci, or a type of imaginary landscape with ancient ruins as a central feature. Among the ruins, before a statue of Hercules and his son Telephus, we see some figures grouped around a gesticulating man. The artist has here imaginatively pictured an apostle’s sermon somewhere in the Roman empire, thus giving this capriccio a religious meaning as well.
