Bergström had been to France but like most of the Swedish artists had not been particularly influenced by Impressionism. This painting is an exception, the snow stretches out and the artist accounts for the fleeting impact of sunlight and shadow on the entire landscape. He has used blue, grey, mauve and other colours but even so the viewer has no difficulty in perceiving the snow as white.
