This almost full-length portrait of Johan August Meijerfeldt is unusual for its time. It builds upon the Baroque tradition, testifying to the subject’s high status as the army’s commanding officer in Finland during the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-90. Meijerfelt was appointed field marshal in 1790. His first marriage was to Lovisa Augusta Sparre, best known as one of the three graces at the Gustavian court.
