The Filoque pseudonym probably hides a Swedish noble who was an amateur painter. This winter landscape, with timber buildings by a dam and sluices, is an allegory of winter and was part of a series on the seasons that hung at Läckö Castle in the time of Carl Gustaf Tessin. The high cliffs in the background are reminiscent of Everdingen’s fantastical Nordic landscapes.
