Hedvig Sofia participated in her father Karl XI’s hunts from an early age. In this portrait, the princess is standing in the forest. She is holding a weapon in her hands and is dressed in a hunting costume, with a coat that has a practical and masculine cut. Suitable quarry can be seen in the background, to the right, in the form of a pair of capercaillies. The style associates the painting with David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl’s studio, where common subjects included portraits, hunting pictures and animals.
