This depiction of Hedvig Sofia matches one of the options in David von Krafft’s drawing of compositions for female portraits. The princess is sitting in front of a drapery, with a column and a view of landscape in the background. The only indication that of her royal status is that her cloak is lined and trimmed with ermine. In 1698, Hedvig Sofia became duchess of Holstein-Gottorp by marriage, although she primarily resided in Sweden, where this portrait probably was painted.
