This portrait tells a story of great sadness. Christina Maria von Hermansson was the first wife of the architect Gustaf af Sillén, and the couple had a son, Georg Jöns. Mother and son died within a few months of each other in 1810. In this posthumous image, the mother rests a medallion portrait of Georg on an antique-style gravestone, with cypresses in the background. The inscription on the frame reads: “But imagine how I suffer even more – my only child is lost!”
