Born in Gothenburg to English parents, Chapman studied shipbuilding in England and on the continent. Following his return home he became a master shipbuilder to the Swedish navy, was ennobled, taking the name af Chapman, and eventually became an admiral. As a naval architect he was world-famous. This portrait is one of Pasch’s most characterful, with dramatic lighting. The sitter wears an unusual hooded work coat. He seems to be turning his head and body in different directions.
