The doctor, entrepreneur and politician Ivan Bratt is chiefly remembered for his efforts to regulate the sale of alco- hol in Sweden, which resulted in the ration book system that was in use from 1919 to 1955. Bratt was elected as a liberal to the Lower House of the Riksdag in 1921. For a time he was also on the board of the Swedish Eugenics Society. Here Dardel has portrayed Bratt as a politician and debater, with his hands raised in a rhetorical gesture.
