Gustaf Fredrik Åbergson was one of the Royal Theatre’s more prominent actors in the early decades of the 19th century, famous for his fine figure and melodious voice. Here Åbergson wears the oriental costume he had himself bought in Paris, in which he appeared for many years as the Caliph of Baghdad. The work, premiered in Paris in 1800 and Stockholm in 1808, is a one-act opéra comique, with a simple plot that involves the caliph moving in disguise among the people.
