Nils Blommér was the most promising student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts when he was commissioned in 1846 to portray the four younger children of Oscar I: Princes Oscar, Gustav and August and Princess Eugénie. He painted them in a Romantic spirit, with delicate limbs and sensitive, innocent expressions. Eugénie, the second youngest of the siblings, is around 16 in this portrait. She remained unmarried and was active as a philanthropist, composer and artist.
