Queen Lovisa is portrayed here in the fabulous fancy dress she wore as Elizabeth I of England at Ulriksdal on 3 March 1859. The palace was ablaze with light, knights and ladies in waiting thronged its halls and the champagne sparkled. A hundred and fifty guests moved about the historically inspired settings, celebrating the completion of work on the interior. The artist has used a light, bright palette, inspired by the new ideals from Paris.
