In spring 1697 Charles XI fell ill with severe stomach pains, and on 5 April he died at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. The post-mortem revealed extensive abdominal cancer. Ehrenstrahl painted the king one last time as he lay on his deathbed, a portrayal underlining the official accounts of his quiet demise as a humble and righteous Christian. When his grave was later opened, he was found to be wearing the wig shown in the portrait.
