The Austrian painter Johann Baptist Lampi arrived in St Petersburg in 1791 and was one of many foreign artists who received numerous portrait commissions from the imperial family and their court. Lampi painted this por- trait when the young Swedish king Gustav IV Adolf went to St Petersburg in August 1796 to court Grand Duchess Alexandra. It may possibly have been modelled on the miniaturist Johan Erik Bolinder’s image of the royal suitor.
