Carl Larsson has painted the Nobel prizewinning poet Erik Axel Karlfeldt in profile, with a dreamy expression. The Dalecarlian wall hanging in the background Larsson “once copied at the Nordic Museum”, and its motif alludes to Karlfeldt’s strong links to the province. Larsson and Karlfeldt had the same circles of friends in Stockholm. After a period when he had lost the desire to paint, Larsson wrote in his book Jag (Myself) that he would “try with Karlfeldt. He deserves it”.
