Pasch was good at snapping up the latest trends in decorative painting in the mid-18th century. He was influenced by the French artists engaged to decorate the Royal Palace. He also found inspiration in examples from French pattern books, printed and circulated for this purpose. Books like these contained, for example, works by the French artist Jacques de Lajoue, dramatic architectural compositions that Pasch perhaps sought to imitate here.
