Strindberg is primarily known as an author, but he was also a painter. The sea and sky appear in image after image. Strindberg lacked an artistic education. He painted during periods when he had difficulties writing. When compared with his contemporaries’ beach and cloud studies, it’s clear that Strindberg was not a solitaire, but firmly rooted in the realist tradition.
