Like Hall, Jean-Laurent Mosnier was among the artists who left France during the Revolution. Mosnier emigrated in 1789, subsequently working in Great Britain, Russia and regions of Germany. At that point, Mosnier primarily produced portraits in oils, but during his time in France he was best known as a miniaturist. He was one of the miniaturists who came closest to Hall’s technique, due to his enthusiasm for using broad brushstrokes in watercolours to represent different materials, glimmering silk or metal. One good example is the portrait of a cavalry officer with a gleaming breastplate. Sometimes Mosnier was so proficient at these effects that the result was purely superficial.
