It is not known who this portrait represents, but the elegant headgear, hairstyle and gold chain suggest a man of wealth. The sculpture, carved in marble, is typical of the portrait ideals of the early Renaissance, which combined a growing interest in the individual with a search for moderation and harmony. Idealised beauty and simplified, almost geometrical shapes were characteristic features of portrait sculptures by Laurana.
