A woman combing her hair is a common theme in art throughout the ages. In older times, it was often given various symbolic meanings – such as vanity or transience. In the 19th century, several French artists explored this subject. One example is Gustave Courbet's painting Jo, the Beautiful Irish Woman. Maillol’s small statuette has a different air, however – the figure is stylized and devoid of any symbolic message.
