The sitter is depicted in court costume and is wearing the Great Chain and Star of the Legion of Honour as well as the Great Cross of the Bavarian Order of St. Hubert. This is probably a pendant to the marble bust of his consort Augusta Amalia, shown at the Salon in 1808. At this time the artist, Joseph Chinard, was in Carrara, where his chief patron was the emperor’s sister, Elisa Bacciocchi, owner of the marble quarry.
