Bellman and Sergel were friends. Many of Sergel’s depictions of the poet were made after merrymaking. This medallion portrait also captures this side, with Bellman wearing a wreath of vine leaves and grapes. The likeness was considered exceedingly good, and this is by far the most widely known of Sergel’s medallions.
