Lemoyne’s bust is of the 35-year-old Countess de Brionne, who held a literary salon in Paris. Gustav III had got to know her on a visit to Paris 1771, and they then began a keen correspondence. When the king was given the bust as a gift ten years later, he exclaimed: “A work such as this clearly shows that reproductions of beauteous nature surpass all the inventions of artists.”
