Alabaster or bronze reductions of ancient sculptures were among the coveted objects that 18th-century tourists to the Italian peninsula took home. Florence and Rome had big workshops that specialised in manufacturing these small sculptures. One of the most successful was run by the brothers Giacomo and Giovanni Zoffoli in Rome. Gustav III shopped here during his 1783-1784 Italian tour, buying this Apollo di Belvedere among several other pieces.
