    First half of 19th century
    NMI 285

Wood: Linden (Tilia sp.), egg tempera
on canvas. Panel made of two boards
with two splines inlaid from opposite
    sides.

    PROVENANCE: Siri Aschberg; Gift of
    S.Aschberg 1961
CONSERVATION: Losses of paint layers and
ground specially along joint in central part,
    darkened varnish panel worm-eaten, corners
and edges damaged, losses of wood
    The iconography adheres to tradition,
with the Mother of God above in
the centre, and beneath her Romanus,
the singer and hymn-writer, flanked on
the left by the Patriarch of Jerusalem,
among others, and on the right by
Andrey the Holy Fool with his disciple.
In the bottom right corner, within
    a separate architectural frame, is
a scene from the legend of the life
of Romanus, showing how the Mother
of God appears to the young singer in
a dream, when he has lost his voice.
She gives him a scroll to eat.1
