NM: scattered retouches; NM 1949 and
1986: Blistering repaired. Uneven, partly
deteriorated varnish; nails from lost halo
on St Andrew’s head; parts of silver missing
on edges
In this icon the image has been vertically
divided into five oblong fields by
columns supporting the terminal fivedomed
cathedral. The picture has also
been divided horizontally, into an
upper and lower section, the latter of
which has been given a separate architectural
background. A strictly sym -
met rical interpretation has been put
on the traditional iconography. Below
left, the Mother of God appears to
St Romanus, the hymn-writer and
singer.
