This subject, based on a hymn to
the Mother of God sung during the
Liturgy of St Basil the Great, was especially
    popular in 16th century Russia.
The hymn-writer St John of Damascus
is shown in this iconography on the
right side, leading a group of holy men
and women. John the Baptist is depict -
ed in the corresponding position on
    the left in this icon.1
In Kjellin’s catalogue from 1933, this
icon is listed as Dostoyno yest (It is proper).
1 Cf. cat. no 77, in which the hymn-writer has no
counterpart. For the iconography see St Petersburg
    1995, p 127
