with two splines inlaid across the panel
(both replaced); back painted brown.

CONSERVATION: Restored prior to entering
NM: painting cleaned; insertions on borders
and background; NM 1973: the back
doubled with later panel; NM 1975: laying
down of blisters, consolidation of flaking
paint layers along an old crack. Paint losses
along a crack to the right of centre; damage
to paint layers and ground along the edges;
nail holes on borders and background from
metal cover.
On the lower left border a full-length
figure of a hermit, probably Saint
Makarius of Egypt (inscription lost).
