The six painted scenes depict, from left
to right, the following events in Holy
Week: the Institution of the Eucharist,
the Washing of the Feet, Gethsemane,
the Kiss of Judas, the Carrying of the
Cross and the Entombment. Five
church festivals are depicted on the
metal crucifix: the Presentation in the
Temple, the Entry into Jerusalem, the
Resurrection, the Ascension and the
Old Testament Trinity. The painting,
in late-Baroque style, is of high quality.
Originally this icon probably depicted
nine scenes from the Passion of Christ
or possibly a painted crucifix surround -
ed by Passion scenes. Metal frame and
insertion of metal cross probably
mounted in the early 19th century following
a fashion of the time. Not
necessarily made within Old Believer
circles.
