CONSERVATION: Restored prior to entering
NM: heavily restored and repainted in
early 20th century except for parts of the
face. Surface heavily abraded, with paint
losses; minor damage to the wood along the
outer edges; darkened varnish
This variant of the Mandylion, with
the outermost tip of the beard forked, is
known in popular tradition as “Christ
of the Wet Beard” (Mokraya brada).1
