In the late summer and early autumn of 1791, when Hall was in Spa, he produced some watercolour landscapes that feature views of the city’s surroundings. He also described his experiences in letters to his wife, Adélaïde: ”I have, in particular, a favourite place to which I often go, even in moonlight. You will not have seen anything as beautiful. Such things are only in novels: wonderful valleys, hills, leafy forests, edged by a river with thousands of rapids, sometimes hidden by bushes, sometimes flowing in the open, with a gentle babbling […]”. These views were among the objects that Hall’s physician, Jean François de Housse, listed in the artist’s estate.
