Like many other artists in eighteenth-century Paris, Hall was an admirer of Rubens. This profile portrait of the French king Henri IV is an extract from one of Rubens’ major compositions from the Marie de’ Medici Cycle, now in the Louvre. The artist produced this vibrantly coloured enamel in 1781.
