Lié Louis Périn-Salbreux quickly adopted the Swede Peter Adolf Hall’s free and vibrant brushwork. He came into contact with the celebrated Hall through his friend, Roslin. Like Hall, Périn-Salbreux worked with elegant accents in the clothes and drapes. They also shared a love of locating their models in countryside or parks. However, Périn-Salbreux was more mannered in his depictions of the models’ faces and uniquely almond-shaped eyes. Just as in Hall’s case, the artist was affected by the French Revolution, as his wealthy clients emigrated. Financial devaluation also led to Périn-Salbreux losing his capital, and he left Paris in 1799 to take over his family’s woollen mill in Reims.
