Peter Adolf Hall from Borås fundamentally changed miniature painting in France. Instead of painting with tiny stippling and cold colours, he introduced freer brushwork and used warmer tones. The painterly technique is apparent in this self-portrait, in which Hall presents himself as a confident artist, wigless and casually dressed. The French Revolution had begun when this was painted. Hall chose to follow his customers into exile, and died in Liège 1793.
