Count Axel von Fersen was a young Swede who sometimes resided in Paris, sometimes in Versailles, in the 1770s. He was particularly favoured at the court by Queen Marie-Antoinette. Hall painted him on numerous occasions, but this enamel portrait with its bold choice of colouring was probably produced the end of the 1770s.
