This portrait of Baroness Ulrika Eleonora Örnskiöld, née von Berchner, is from the early 1770s. She was famed for her wealth, her splendid lifestyle with many lovers and her mastery of court intrigue. In 1776, she was made Lady of State to Queen Sofia Magdalena. Hall’s portrait was therefore produced before this, in Paris. Here the artist worked in a free style, but the colours are cold, with washes in brown and grey. As in other works, he has allowed the ivory to shine through, its transparent lustre depicting the model’s skin.
