For Hall, being king of miniaturists was not enough, now he also wanted to display his skill at the difficult-to-master art of enamel painting. He started testing this technique in 1771 and could proudly display the results at the Salons of 1773 and 1777. One excellent example is this study of van Dyck’s portrait of Anthonius Triest, Bishop of Gent.
