Jakob Axel Gillberg painted this portrait of an unknown man in 1795, while he was still studying in England. There he adopted the linear style, emphasising form over colouring. Also in the English manner, Gillberg placed the model outdoors with the sky as backdrop; he gazes at the viewer, his head slightly turned, as the wind catches his locks.
