In 1782 and the next two decades, Prince Marcantonio Borghese had an English park created as part of the renewal of the vast Villa Borghese park on the Pincian Hill in Rome. He was helped by architect Antonio Asprucci. This view shows one of the new features, a simple timber temple resembling a hermitage by a pond in the park. Frenchman Pierre-Athanase Chauvin was one of the many plein air painters who worked in and around Rome in about 1800.
