Julia Beck’s garden motif from Grez-sur-Loing in 1883 is an interesting example of experimentation with perspective och composition with Japanese influence. She has chosen to paint a simple motif of a woman standing in a cabbage patch (her friend Gerda Tirén) on a large, demanding scale, which can be seen as a type of manifesto. The colours are less flattering and the perspective less conventional than, for example, in works by Carl Larsson.
