Among the first things Niclas Lafrensen the Younger had to do on returning home from Paris in 1791 was to paint portraits of the royals. Here is Gustav III at Stockholm’s Royal Palace, wearing the national costume. The king is standing on the Savonnerie carpet he had been given by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette on his visit to Versailles in the summer of 1784. This is probably one of the last official portraits of Gustav III, dated 1792.
