Hilleström started his career as a weaver at Stockholm Palace, later travelling to Paris to study painting under François Boucher. On his return to Sweden, Hilleström specialised in genre painting from different milieus; there it is not far between painting kitchen interiors and still lifes. Here, he has staged a still life that captures precisely how the ham, the tin and the surface of the faience reflect the light and contrast with each other.
