The environs outside Rome, with picturesque ruins, offered unlimited opportunities for highly poetic landscape painting. Here the artist has painted Minerva Medica’s temple which, in point of fact, is an elaborate fountain from the time of the Caesars. The sense of a lost Arcadia has, today, acquired an even more profound dimension. The cupola collapsed in 1828 and the building is now squeezed in between the tracks at the Stazione Termini, Rome’s biggest railway station.
