The fortress at Varberg was a motif used by both Richard Bergh and Karl Nordström. They rendered it as part of the bedrock it stood on, as if to show that Sweden’s history and its primeval rock were two parts of the same whole. In Richard Bergh’s painting of the motif a light shines from a solitary window in the central building.
